A new framework for a whole life

Adaptive Life Intelligence

A new measure of what it means to be intelligent — and to remain whole.

Traditional IQ measured the height of a single peak. This framework measures whether the entire house is lit.

The Shift

For more than a century we have treated a narrow band of cognitive performance as the definition of intelligence. The result has been a culture that crowns specialists while quietly accepting the collateral damage — broken relationships, neglected bodies, emotional volatility, and lives that become uninhabitable once the applause fades. Adaptive Life Intelligence begins from a different premise: true intelligence includes the capacity to allocate excellence across the full terrain of a human life, and the wisdom to refuse unnecessary sacrifice.

The Seven Dimensions

Intelligence becomes durable when it is distributed across the entire terrain of a life.

Meta-Cognitive Wisdom

The Intelligence That Knows the Cost of Its Own Brilliance

The capacity to perceive the trade-offs of one’s own mind and to stop over-investing when the price to the rest of life becomes too high.

Social Intelligence

The Ability to Read the Weather of Other Minds

The practiced capacity to read people accurately, build genuine rapport, and influence without extraction or manipulation.

Learning Intelligence

The Nature of Selective Depth

The discernment to know what deserves deep mastery, what should be learned only lightly, and what should be left alone.

Biological Intelligence

The Body That Carries Every Other Form of Mind

Deep awareness of the physical substrate and the disciplined willingness to treat it as foundational rather than expendable.

Verbal Intelligence

The Precision That Makes Thought Shareable

The ability to turn complex interior experience into clear, precise, and living language.

Practical Financial Intelligence

Material Freedom Without Servitude to Material

The capacity to secure material autonomy while refusing to let money become master or identity.

Emotional Regulation

The Governance of the Inner Climate

The ability to feel fully without being ruled, and to turn affective information into clearer judgment rather than chaos.

Adaptive Life Intelligence

A quiet revolution against the old measure of genius. The book lays out the seven dimensions in full, provides a rigorous self-assessment, and argues that the modern genius is not the person who climbs one peak at any cost, but the person who keeps the entire house illuminated.

Book Two

A second volume is in development: psychological profiles of Adaptive Life Intelligence. It will examine common and rare combinations across the seven dimensions — the patterns that produce durable flourishing, and the patterns that produce impressive but fragile lives.

Self-Assessment

A provisional self-assessment appears in the book. A more rigorous, multi-method instrument is under development. The current version is offered as a first approximation — a clearer mirror than unaided reflection, not a finished psychometric tool.

About the Author

Thomas McCarthy was born in 1975 on an Air Force base in Bangkok and raised across three continents, eighteen U.S. states, and fifteen different households. The early years were marked by material scarcity and constant discontinuity. Those conditions forged a particular relationship to reality: an almost physical awe at the fact of existence, and a lasting refusal to trade understanding for comfort. He went on to design and operate large-scale carrier-grade networks, lead major systems integrations, and help build companies of significant enterprise value. He holds an Executive Master’s in Technology Management from Stevens Institute of Technology and has completed executive programs at Columbia Business School and UC Berkeley. The framework of Adaptive Life Intelligence did not begin as an academic project. It began as a long attempt to name the forms of intelligence that actually determine whether a life remains coherent and worth living.
